For this olfactive journey dedicated to the exploration of a new leather accord, a painter and a writer have given their own vision of the vast, opulent land of India.

French artist Marie Marcell, who graduated from the Beaux-Arts with a master's degree in design in 2015, continued her training at the Duperré fashion school in Paris. After working alongside designer Manish Arora in New Delhi, she now devotes her time to painting and ceramics, nourished by visions of a tropical childhood in Mayotte. For Indian Leather, she drew on her memories of India, where scents play a dominant role everywhere, in temples and cities alike.

Laurine Roux is a French author of poetry and novels, for which she has received several French literary awards, most recently the Prix Alexandre-Vialatte 2023 for “Sur l'épaule des géants”. Sensitive to the places and geographies that populate her stories, she has lent her pen to imagining the landscape fragrance Indian Leather.

India, its vastness. It is experienced by seizing a pigment, a leather accord that unfurls around a cypriol heart: this plant with its potent, rich, smoky note is the friend of the Indian rivers. Associated with romantic success, it was used as a ritual fragrance on women’s saris and looked after men’s hearts. It also evokes the spirit of the rickshaws, the heavens, the colours, the offerings, the smiles, the lights, the dishes, the millennia, the animals, the palaces, the landscapes. From Mumbai to Kochi, from Kolkata to Bangalore, there are sensations as far as the eye can see. The journey is paved with the infinite, with wisdom, with wood and flowers, its rhythm marked by oud essence, olibanum and styrax resins, and rose and jasmine absolutes. Everything in it is magnificent, as though time and space made an extraordinary pact with the help of Ganesha the elephant-headed god. Vanilla pod extract and later, patchouli essence, from north to south, every vision takes on a new sharpness, a tangible thickness, a denser movement. It beckons us back over and over again to celebrate the eternal surprises it holds, as we never stop savouring its scent.

Perfumer's inspiration

"The sensory journey I'm proposing with Indian Leather was inspired by the olfactory discovery of an exceptionally high-quality raw material: Cypriol Heart, aninnovation that magnifies the leathery part of cypriol, a plant widely grown in India. Its scent is reminiscent of intense vegetal leather and offers a highly textured sensoriality. To reinforce this material aspect, I wanted it to meet a magnificent oud, with which it resonates perfectly.”

Cypriol & Oud

Cypriol, known as Nagar motha in Hindi and Nagar musta in Sanskrit, is a plant closely akin to papyrus. Primarily found in riverbeds across India, it holds significant importance in ancient Indian rituals. Its roots were historically used for perfuming women's garments, particularly traditional saris, while a blend containing cypriol was applied to men's foreheads to ensure romantic success. Cypriol exhibits a generous woody, vegetal, and leathery note, with a base akin to vetiver, and further enhanced by the presence of oud wood. The dark, fragrant resin derived from this plant is highly valued for its amber-like, leathery, and smoky note, which imbues the composition with a sensual, animalic, and mystical facet.
