How a chypre is built
Chypre is not an ingredient but an architecture. Named after Cyprus and fixed as an accord at the beginning of the twentieth century, it works on three levels: a bright citrus opening, a floral heart — most often rose or jasmine — and a base of moss, patchouli and labdanum. The pleasure of a chypre lies in that contrast. It begins luminous and ends shadowy, earthy, faintly bitter.
The citrus opening
Bergamot above all, sometimes joined by blackcurrant buds or rhubarb for a tart green edge. It lasts minutes, but it sets the expectation the rest of the fragrance will quietly overturn.
The floral heart
Rose and geranium are the usual choices, occasionally lily of the valley or jasmine. Their role is transitional: they carry the composition from brightness towards the depth waiting underneath.
The mossy base
Here the chypre reveals itself. Patchouli brings damp earth, labdanum a leathery sweetness, moss the cool green bitterness of undergrowth after rain. This is the accord that gives the family its reputation for elegance and its unmistakable dry finish.
Chypre accords in the Memo Paris range
- Corfu — Turquoise Musk. Bergamot, blackcurrant buds and rhubarb open; rose, geranium and lily of the valley at the heart; patchouli, musks and moss below — the classical chypre progression.
- Odéon — The Seine and the rose. Rose absolute and candied rose over sandalwood, cashmeran and patchouli, closing on tonka bean, dry amber and musks — a rosier, more modern reading.
- Kedu — Open sesame. A citrus opening of grapefruit and mandarin resolved by cedarwood, musk and moss.
Who chypre fragrances suit
A chypre asks for a little patience: its opening and its finish can seem to belong to two different perfumes. That evolution is precisely the appeal for anyone who finds linear fragrances monotonous. Genderless by construction, chypres wear well in mid-season and hold beautifully on wool and skin alike.
